Ideas to promote reading aloud to children, storytimes, and to encourage reading

Libraries
- hold additional storytimes in the late afternoon and early evening
- print the storytimes schedules on library receipts
- signage with Storytimes schedules: banner on building, sidewalk signs

Storytimes outreach in the community
- summer read alouds in parks and gardens in the summertime
- partner up with the YMCA and other community organizations

Promoting reading aloud at home
- have booths at children's expos promoting reading aloud directly to parents
- have Read Aloud-athons
- have a Read Aloud Expo

Promoting reading aloud to expectant parents
- partnering with hospitals, OB/Gyn's, pediatricians, and healthcare companies
- integrating/including reading aloud as part of the prenatal care information package to encourage expectant parents to start developing habit of reading to new babies when they are born
- begin promoting with OB/Gyn, continue with pediatrician
- promote partnerships with hospitals, especially Children's Hospitals
- promote sponsorship by healthcare companies, i.e. infant formula, Gerber, baby foods, prenatal vitamins, Johnson & Johnson

Schools
- live read alouds or recorded audiobooks played on the school bus

Promote closed-captioning CC
- encourage parents to turn on the closed-captioning on the TV to help improve literacy skills

Read aloud channels
- TV, radio, and internet radio broadcasting or streaming children's audio books

Libraries and the business community partnerships
- develop more partnerships between businesses and libraries to promote reading aloud outreach programs 
- host storytimes in business retail locations
- hold storytimes in Latino markets like Liborio and Avanza

Promoting reading in Denver
- play the audiobook of the One Book, One Denver book selection at Light Rail and Bus stations
- instead of playing music in elevators, play recorded audio of short stories or audiobook commercials

Giving books
- give and collect children's books instead of toys for holiday drives

Businesses can integrate storytimes as part of their marketing programs
- at tradeshows, hold Storytimes at tradeshows and give out children's books
- give "book buddies" with children's books - stuffed animals that go with the book characters

Children's bookstore focusing on 0 to 5 year olds
- with multiple storytimes during the day
- bookshelves that are easy for young children to reach
- books shelved facing out with front covers showing
